Part Time

The creative industries are a significant contributor to the South African economy and a growing sector in the creation of employment opportunities. This programme of workshops makes provision for individuals to acquire essential business and technical skills needed to work as entrepreneurs or within the industrial context.

The concept of continuous professional development and life-long learning forms an integral part of the Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion Design ethos. The founder’s mission and vision for the academy is to enable the personal enrichment and empowerment of individuals who have a passion for the fashion industry.

The workshop programme aims to:

  • Cover practical skills and knowledge needed to make finished fashion wear items.
  • Expose the candidate to a range of materials, mediums and methods of recording design processes.
  • Develop an understanding of the visual implications of the design process.
  • Expose the candidate to research methods for inspiration.
  • Produce and design reference for development into fashion wear.
  • Expose the candidate to the key terms, concepts, facts, principles, rules and theory of fashion buying and merchandising.

Workshop delivery structure:

  • 15 hours of guided learning per Project.
  • Projects run from March to October.
  • Classes take place from 14:00 – 18:00 during weekdays.

Workshop Summary

Fashion Design and Technical Drawing

A series of projects designed to guide and demonstrates the planning and creative process required to develop storyboard/technical drawing board for projects focused on:
  1. Skirts
  2. Trousers
  3. Shirts
  4. Dresses

Creative Computing

A series of projects that covers the skills needed to compile and construct digital based storyboards to an industry accepted standard using the most commonly utilised computer software:

  1. Fashion bottoms (skirts and trousers)
  2. Fashion tops (shirts and dresses)

Creative Studies

A series of projects covering the skills needed to research and source inspiration as points of departure on the development of design ideas and the development of drawing techniques using a range of media.

Pattern Making

A series of projects covering the skills needed to draft working patterns, final patterns and flat patterns for a range of garment types namely:

  1. Skirts
  2. Trousers
  3. Shirts
  4. Dresses

Garment Construction

A series of projects covering the skills needed to construct samples and final garments to an exemplary standard for a range of garment types namely:

  1. Skirts
  2. Trousers
  3. Shirts
  4. Dresses

Fashion Buying and Merchandising

A project focused on Range Development highlighting and identifying the critical contribution of buying and design functions in the development of a successful range of design ideas.

Introduction to Textile Studies

The project identifies fibre type, yarn structure and fabrication methods based on visual analysis; understanding the impact of production processes on product performance, product cost and consumer satisfaction and understand the laws and labelling requirements that regulate textile distribution.
