My Work Integrated Learning at PEP was a great learning experience. I gained valuable information about buying and the retail industry. I learnt from professional buyers that a buyer should be a good communicator, have an eye for fashion and stand firmly behind what they are presenting.

Work Integrated Learning at the Foschini Group has given me the opportunity to work in the retail environment. This has greatly improved my understanding of the industry and the requirements of all the different departments. At the beginning of the year I also worked on an international film set and it was a dream come true. Being able to see how they run a wardrobe department was an incredible experience.

I enjoyed my Work Integrated Learning experience at the Old Khaki department of Cape Union Mart. It felt like I was joining a family rather than a business. All the team building exercises, charity drives, and employee competitions helped me to achieve many goals and helped me realise that I really do want to be a buyer.

Doing Work Integrated Learning is a good way of coming to understand the industry one would like to join. One can gain so much from the experience, such as how to communicate clearly with others, and to build self-confidence and determination.

Work Integrated Learning gave me the opportunity to experience the realities of the Fashion Industry first hand – being faced with the positive and negative aspects in a working environment on a daily basis really opened up my eyes. I feel that my 10 day experience working with an independent designer in Cape Town was insightful, relevant and very valuable – not only did it just help me to develop on a personal and professional level, but it also helped me to further establish my role and identity as a young fashion designer in South Africa.

I completed my Work Integrated Learning unit over two opportunities; one was in the retail industry, where I hope to end up one day, and the other in the styling side of the industry. The retail experience was really interesting and gave me a better understanding of how everything works and the processes that I hope to be involved in one day. The styling experience, although fun and interesting, gave me an opportunity to see what other work opportunities are out there, but that ultimately my first career choice would still be retail.

During my 2 weeks of Work Integrated Learning at Mr Price Sport, I assisted one of the buyers with many of his day-to-day functions including current trade, raising purchase order, quality control, monitoring and strategizing sales and meeting with suppliers. This was truly an amazing experience and I left with a greater understanding of the buying process and the retail industry as a whole.

I completed my ten day internship at Mr. Price Sport in Durban. It was lovely to be involved in the process from range building to garment sampling and quality control and relevant admin work. Learning about the specific customer, how garments should fit them and how they have chosen to spend their money as seen through sales history reports was interesting.
