Copenhagen Fashion Summit: Examining Sustainability in Fashion
The Copenhagen Fashion Summit is the world’s largest event on fashion sustainability.
On 12th May 2016, more than 1200 participants, international key players from the fashion industry, as well as experts, NGOs, opinion makers, media and politicians gathered in the Copenhagen Concert Hall to “catalyse a discussion on the evolution of a successful fashion industry in a world where new business models are required to tackle the growing sustainability challenges facing the planet and our societies.”
The theme for 2016 is Responsible Innovation. By assembling key players from the global fashion industry to share their knowledge and ideas on new and sustainable solutions, the aim is to inspire, motivate, and give tools to implement a sustainable mind-set in the fashion industry.
Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is the patron of this year’s event, and speakers include, among others, Burak Cakmak (Dean of the School of Fashion at Parsons School of Design, expert in the field of sustainable design), Livia Firth (Founder & Creative Director, Eco Age Ltd. and Oxfam Global Ambassador), Juan Orlando Hernández (President of Honduras, who has worked tirelessly to improve living conditions for people from all walks of life in his country), Rick Ridgeway (Vice president of public engagement, Patagonia, developer of numerous environmental and sustainability initiatives and founding chairman of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition). Also included are 29 panellists from the jurisdictions of fashion, politics and conservation, as well as eight discussion leaders.
Topics for discussion are:
- THE POWER OF MEDIA
- THE BRAVE NEW WORLD OF DENIM
- LUXURY BEYOND SUSTAINABILITY
- FASHION AND POLITICS
- WILL TECHNOLOGY SAVE FASHION?
- THE FUTURE OF FASHION
To ensure that the message reaches as many people as possible, the full summit is live-streamed on copenhagenfashionsummit.com.
It really is heartening that the issues of sustainability and accountability in Fashion, core values at Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion Design, are at last receiving the focused attention it requires. Working together, it is possible to create a better world through fashion.
