MEET THE TEAM

Founder – Elizabeth Galloway
In Loving Memory of our Mother (1961 – 2023)
After years of providing informal training, to women who were housewives, in theatres, church halls and school halls, Elizabeth founded Elizabeth Galloway in 1996.
Elizabeth grew up inspired by her grandmother, a dressmaker, teacher and a huge influence on Elizabeth’s life. She made Elizabeth’s clothes and Elizabeth would watch her work in fascination. With an ingrained love of clothing, Elizabeth started learning from a very young age to make her own clothes, as taught by her grandmother.
“It seems obvious, but it is important to point out that students enrolled at EG are there by choice and are fortunate enough to be following their dream. Our courses require three or four years of working hard and consistently – a small price to pay when you consider that our training will stand you in good stead to achieve success in any fashion-related career you embark on. Unlike some tertiary courses, this programme aims to equip learners with skills they will use on a daily basis in their future fashion careers. Therefore, each and every task is equally important, as it presents students with an opportunity to acquire skills.”
“The best advice I can offer students is to take responsibility for their own learning and growth. Motivation comes from within; you are your own best teacher. To be successful in the fashion industry, I believe the three most important criteria are: excellent mental and physical health, excellent planning and time-management, and perseverance in overcoming all obstacles.”
“Fashion Design is one of the most challenging but also most rewarding careers.”

Director & Facilitator – Inez Shaw
(Elizabeth’s daughter)
Email: inez@elizabethgalloway.co.za
Inez is co-director at EG and is energised when coaching her students through research and business ideas and dilemmas. Inez would like to think that the fashion and garment industry holds special potential for vulnerable parts of the population to be economically and socially empowered. Besides this, it is also a super fun and low risk product to enjoy. Inez is of the opinion that “fast fashion is rude” and real sustainable living is not sexy nor marketable.
Inez defines her role on campus as follows:
“I run around and check on everybody and sometimes drive them all a bit crazy – staff and students alike.”
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Social Sciences Honours in Organisational Change Management NQF Level 8
(University of Cape Town)

Director & Facilitator – Fiona Abdo

Presently Fiona lectures in Fashion Design and is co-director at EG. Fiona’s main focus is sustainable business practices, contemporary fashion education methods and curriculum development, with a student-centered approach.
“Getting to work with young creative people every day is inspiring, rewarding and fun. I strive to see the individual and together over the three- or four-years’ work towards developing their talents, achieving their goals, and guiding them to be competent young designers, makers, and members of the fashion industry, as well as being conscious, empathetic humans who will add value not only to the industry, but to the lives of those around them. Witnessing my students succeed is my reward and brings me great pride.”
#When you love what you do, it never feels like work – I got really lucky😊

She has since then taken on the role of Admissions & Marketing Manager and CAD facilitator for the first years. Alicia is normally your first point of contact at the Academy, be it through an email, phone call or campus tour.
“Studying fashion is not for the faint of heart. You would be surprised to find out that we don’t just make pretty dresses… We work really hard and have to be mentally and physically fit to take on 3 or even 4 years of fashion studies. Fashion is one of the most rewarding and challenging fields of study which opens many doors for graduates.”
“I had a newfound confidence when I started my studies at EG. The classes are small and the facilitators prioritise meeting students where they are at. EG truly is like a family and a home away from home, complete with all your eccentric and weird friends who love clothes as much as you do!”
Alicia advises applicants who are planning on fashioning their career at EG, to immerse themselves in everything fashion. “Make use of your facilitators, the provided facilities and any or all opportunities that present themselves.”

Vicky got stuck in with admissions and served time at the reception desk. During her time as an intern, Vicky quickly learnt about the day to day running of Elizabeth Galloway. She spent time assisting in production classes and kindled a passion for patternmaking. In 2020, Vicky completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Management. Since 2023, Vicky has been a Patternmaking and Garment Construction Facilitator on the Diploma in Fashion Design. She also moonlights as an Excel nerd and, over the years, has streamlined some of the admin systems at EG.
Vicky is passionate about helping students to grow as unique individuals. There is nothing as rewarding as seeing a student take ownership of their learning and master the knowledge and skills required to produce considered and high quality garments. Working at EG means she has the support and space to continually develop her teaching practice and align her teaching with both the needs of the students and industry.
“Make no mistake, being a fashion student is tough – but so so worth it! You get what you give, so embrace every opportunity to learn and grow. The facilitators at EG are always willing to come alongside and support you in achieving your goals.”

Winnie advises new applicants to make sure that they do your research before they make their decision between our Diploma and BA Degree in Fashion Design. “The programmes are completely different, offering different subjects and with different expectations. New applicants are encouraged to be open to the learning process. “Make what you learn mean something to you. Do everything with intention.
