Award winning Elizabeth Galloway alumna Tarien Malherbe is set to take part in the inaugural Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town which takes place in the Cape Town International Convention Centre from the 25th to 28th of July 2012. African Fashion International in collaboration with the Cape Town Fashion Council is presenting this specialized showcase for emerging designers, and has selected five designers with the potential to develop their brands into sustainable businesses, to show at this prestigious event.
AFI Global Brand & Marketing Manager, Allana Finley, states that the intention is to “… empower the fashion leaders of tomorrow and provide room for the healthy growth of the South African fashion industry.”
This is echoed by CTFC CEO Bryan Ramkilawan. “The CTFC’s mission is to mold the Western Cape fashion industry into a sustainable, desirable and cutting edge entity on a national and international basis. Our fundamental strategies aim to turn key emerging brands into sustainable businesses by identifying and providing them with viable resources and opportunities – in turn cultivating the success of the fashion industry as a whole.”
The show is aptly themed Icons in the Making.
After graduating in 2007, Tarien was taken onto a mentorship program launched by the Academy’s founders to help promising alumni establish themselves in the fashion industry. The very successful Non-European label which Tarien is taking to Cape Town Fashion Week, grew from this partnership.
We will be keeping an eye on Tarien, and wish her all the best for this marvelous opportunity.
