As the European summer gets under way, it is party time in the Northern Hemisphere. Meanwhile, here we have to wrap up warmly, and try to stay snug indoors.
No matter; now is the time to study the latest fashion trends in preparation for matric farewell dances, end-of-the-year functions, New Year’s Eve balls, and what not. Forewarned is forearmed, they say, and where better to get fashion ammunition than from Cannes?
The annual Cinema Against AIDS Gala was held at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes on the 23rd of May. This charity event comprising of a fashion show and an auction, aims to raise funds for the american foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) of which Dame Elizabeth Taylor was a founding member, and is the red carpet occasion of Cannes Film Festival week. As such, it provides an indication of the important trends in formal wear.
Some short dresses as well as high-low hemlines were seen.
These were however far outnumbered by long and floor sweeping gowns, especially fish tail styles.
Waist cut-outs were a popular design feature.
A refreshing youthful trend was sheer skirts.
The most preferred colours were white and nude tones. Black was popular as always, and there were also some eye catching brights.
The fashion show themed “Ultimate Gold Collection” was curated by former French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld. Top models such as Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Karlie Kloss, Joan Smalls, Karolina Kurkova and Alessandra Ambrosio took to the runway to display the 38 selected ensembles from among others Chanel, Prada, Alexander McQueen and Vionnet.
